Recently, we took on a restoration project that truly tested our mettle and showcased the transformative power of professional furniture reupholstery. Here is a look behind the scenes at how we turned a completely shattered vintage platform rocker into a breathtaking, royal burgundy masterpiece.
The "Before": A Diamond in the Absolute Rough

When this vintage armchair first arrived at the Marinas Crafts workshop, it was clinging to life.
The Damage: The original blue vinyl was cracked, peeling, and torn to shreds.
The Foundation: The seat support had completely failed. The original burlap and webbings were gone, leaving the heavy-duty coil springs tangled, collapsed, and spilling onto the floor.
The Padding: Decades-old horsehair and degraded foam insulation were falling out in clumps.
Despite the structural chaos, the chair had incredible bones. It was a classic wingback platform rocker featuring stunning, ornate woodwork—including hand-carved scroll accents and majestic claw-and-ball feet on casters. It was the ultimate candidate for a renaissance.
The Process: Stripping Down and Rebuilding Up
True upholstery isn’t just about slapping new fabric over old problems. It’s an architectural art form. Our team at Marinas Crafts stripped the piece entirely down to its bare wooden frame to address the issues from the inside out.
1. Structural Realignment
Before any fabric was cut, we stabilized the frame, repaired the rocker mechanism, and completely rebuilt the spring system. Every coil spring was retied and secured to ensure the chair would provide firm, comfortable support for another fifty years.
2. Custom Foam Sculpting
To achieve that plush, inviting look, we used high-density, multi-layered foam. As you can see in our workshop progress shots, we custom-cut and channeled the foam over the armrests and frame to perfectly mirror the chair’s original contours while upgrading its overall comfort.
3. The Art of Diamond Tufting
The defining feature of this chair is its deep diamond tufting. This is where true craftsmanship separates itself from amateur DIY projects. Working with a luxurious, deep burgundy velvet, our artisans meticulously hand-pleated the fabric, pulling the buttons into precise diamond patterns across the backrest and inner arms. Velvet is notoriously unforgiving—it requires a gentle touch and absolute symmetry to ensure the pile reflects light evenly.
The "After": A Velvet Masterpiece
The final transformation is nothing short of breathtaking. The battered blue relic is gone, replaced by a regal, statement-making throne.
What Makes the Final Piece So Special?
Rich Burgundy Velvet: The choice of fabric completely elevates the chair, giving it a soft, dramatic texture that begs to be sat in.
Flawless Detailing: The hand-pleated tufting gives the backrest incredible depth and lumbar support.
Precision Nailhead Trim: We lined the sweeping curves of the armrests and the base with individual, antique-style metallic nailheads, highlighting the chair's classic silhouette.
Restored Woodwork: The dark wood finish on the platform base, carved scrollwork, and claw feet was meticulously cleaned and polished, making the rich grain pop against the crimson fabric.
